New Years Run/ saturday run

Sounds like a couple people maybe interested in running on new years. I know no one will want to start too early. Is 10 too early? How about west seattle? If we met where we did last time, at the cafe just under the west seattle bridge - then we can have lunch together afterwards. Or does anyone have a better suggetion for run/meeting place?

Saturday 9am - I suggest the east sammamish trail. Meet in the furthest east parking lot of marymoore park ( like we did for captain jacks) then since it is an out and back ( on soft surface) we can each run the distance we need to for this week - as we each get back into the swing of things.

Well.....what do ya'll think?

Monday night?

Hello! I am back in Seattle, almost recovered from my evil cold and ready to run. Green Lake at 6:45pm tomorrow?

Barb

Thank you!!

Thanks to Mary Kay, Melinda and especially Lee - who called this morning and yelled at me to get my ass out of bed and down to fort dent and wouldn't listen to any excuses - for getting me out there and running today. Ladies I wouldn't have run at all today if not for you. It's on days like this when you just really don't want to do anything that you fully appreciate persistant teammates. Ya'll rock!

This week - anyone interested in a 6-8mile run either wed or thursday? Maybe a 10am start?

Saturday, 12/27?

I know this might be early to ask the question, but, are we running tomorrow and if so, where? I think there are three of us around, Lee, Jen, and I. I'm thinking we might find more traction on a soft surface, but I can't think of any flat trails on the southend. Trails might be okay too, since they wouldn't have extra snow plowed over top. I'm looking at 16 miles, but I haven't run in two weeks and I'm fighting a cold, so I might wimp early.
Let me know.

Merry Christmas!

I hope everyone has a great holiday, and stays safe. Anyone in town and up for a run on saturday - if it's true and the snow is gone by then? Or at least the roads are clear.....
Merry Christmas everyone!

Saturday???

So what is everyone thinking about Saturday morning? Are we still on? Emily and Andrew, how are the roads getting to Seward Park? Is anyone using treads on their shoes? I think a run in the cold, crisp, beautiful sun will be awesome, but I'm really wondering about the tricks to keeping upright and not down on my butt. Ideas? Thanks.

Thursday and Satruday Run

Thursday - Anyone up for the Lake Union Loop, weather allowing. I ran this last week and the only bad ice issues were on the bridges.

Saturday - I was thinking Cedar River because it is a flat out and back and something different, but it sounds like Jen and I have been out voted this time. 17 miles here we come!

Speed Work Tomorrow?

Hello, Team Austin. Is everyone up to meet at Green Lake for our speed work at 6:45pm? Guess what? I finally have a flashing safety night light. No more scaring small children and pets in my path. :)

Saturday, December 13, 2008

Have fun sunday!

Hope everyone had a fabulous run today - where ever they were running. And I hope that all of you doing the 12k of kirkland tomorrow have fun and don't get too cold. Should be a great run - and alot of familiar faces. Wish I could be there with you all - especially for the breakfast( cocktails) afterwards!
Anyone thought ahead to monday yet? I should be able to join everyone monday - are we doing greenlake?

Big Finn Hill Park

Melinda,
Does Big Finn Hill Park have a long trail? I could always start with you guys and meet you afterward for coffee.

Saturday Run

Hello. I am so bummed that I had to miss the run last night. :( I know Melinda had posted information about the Captain Jack's Trail run Saturday. Who is planning on doing the trail run? I was thinking of running either Mercer Island or in West Seattle. Our schedule is listed at 11, but I was planning on 14 since I missed my long run last week. Thoughts?

Saturday Run

Thanks to everyone who joined my mystery Christmas trail run this evening. I appreciate all of your positive attitudes and openness to the unknown. You did great and it was definitely fun.

Okay, the plan for Saturday is to meet at Big Finn Hill Park ready to run at 8 AM. We'll run about 6 miles, returning to Big Finn HIll Park at 9 AM to join the Captain Jack's trail game which will be another 5-6 miles.

Afterward I'm sure there will be a coffee stop and Lance is giving a 15% discount at his store. Wear layers and be prepared for icy conditions.

How many miles Thursday?

How far do you all want to run on Thursday? I've got a route loosely mapped out in my head, but I'm not sure how many miles you all want to run. I'm warning you, this is not a flat run and not one we can easily separate on since it it trails and it sounds like I'm the only one who will know the route. I can adjust the length, I just need a general idea of distance. I can change it to mostly or all road running too, but the trail, in my opinion, is fun.

Funny post on a blog I read

http://elizabethfedofsky.blogspot.com/2008/12/designer-bags.html

I have a couple of blogs I read - this post (read the entire thing) made me smile and have a little pride/acceptance for my wrinkles and my saddle bags.

Enjoy

Thursday Run

http://www.finishstrongmovie.com/

Hello Team Austin! Thank you, Lee, for sending out the note about last night. I am happy to say that I am back in town and ready to tackle the challenge of the second half of our training. I have attached a short video called "Finish Strong" to provide some additional inspiration.

We can do this!

What do you think of the Lake Union Loop for Thursday night. I know it is a repeat, but I like it and it is pretty well lit.

Week 9 - 1/2 way done w/ the 18 week training plan

I know it sounds silly - but I'm a little amazed at this point (1/2 way through our training program for the Austin marathon)
  • Amazed I can call 9 miles of running "not too far"
  • Amazed I've actually been running 3 times a week consistently
  • Amazed at the impact once a week speed work actually has on my ability to run faster
  • Amazed that I could improve my Seattle 1/2 marathon time by 13 min (yeah speed work)
  • Amazed how long it took to run 15 miles this week (ouch - I was slow - but I did it)
  • Amazed that in 68 days I'll run 26.2 miles (still having a little trouble visualizing this)
  • Amazed I've been running this much and gained 5 lbs (yes - need to layoff on the sweets)
  • Amazed how much time/running it takes to train for a marathon - how am I supposed to get my Christmas shopping done?
Ok - enough of my lunch time amazement - on to an update about this week

Barb volunteered for this week - but currently out of town (on her way home - currently in the Dallas airport)

Tonight (Monday) - at this point it looks like it is just Jen & I - so will meet at Fort Dent at 6:30 for a south end run (Emily - please join us if you can).

Thursday & Sat - Barb will post more info later this week

Hope your training is amazing you too!

Tonight? monday

Is anyone planning on going to greenlake tonight 645? Either speed work or lap around the lake? I want to run with y'all tonight, but if no one is going to greenlake - i will stay on the eastside. Lee do you need a carpool?
who's got this weeks runs?

Idea for next Saturday, 12/13

Andrew and I were talking after our run this morning. We would both like to do the Captain Jack's trail game next Saturday--it is open to all, no charge. My schedule has me running 14 on the 13th, so I thought we might meet before (probably would have to be running by 7:30 AM) and run 8-9, then join the trail game for the last 5-6 .

Here is the info from Lance's original email.
This will be Captain Jack's first Saturday workout for the 2009 season so I thought what better way to kick things off than with a most adventurous trail game?! This one is open to everyone, CJTC member or not. And there will NOT be a drop in fee for non-members. In fact it would be great if everyone could bring a friend who'd be up for some (potentially) muddy fun. The game will last anywhere from 60-75 minutes and participants can walk or run as much as they prefer.

It will take place in Big Finn Hill Park in Juanita.
Directions from Everyday Athlete: Heading South on 98th Ave NE. Right at the stop light on to Juanita Drive heading up towards Bastyr/ St. Edward State Park. At the top of Juanita Hill there is a QFC. This is the intersection of Holmes Point Rd (NE 141st ST) and Juanita drive. From EA take a RIGHT at the light onto NE 141st ST. RIGHT on 84th Ave NE. RIGHT on NE 138th ST which will dead end in a parking lot.

Following the Trail Game we can celebrate with a coffee and a 15% discount at the local running store in Juanita Village.

January 25

I just wanted to make sure everyone interested has put the run at Port Ludlow on January 25 on your calendar. I have been putting thought into it and have decided that it will be a "spoke" run. By this I mean there will be several "spokes" to the run each starting and ending at the same place. I thought this idea would be fun because then you will be seeing each other more on the out and backs and it will be easier to customize the distances. Also there is a community center with an indoor pool and hot tub. If anyone wants to end at the community center I can arrange that so you can either take a dip in the pool or in the hot tub. The menu is not yet decided but I am consulting with some good chefs. Also if you want to bring significant others they are welcome even if they are not running.

This morning I had a great run. TNT practice started at 8:00 but it was an hour trail game so I knew that I was not going to get my 9 miles in (I am training for the Arizona half in January) so I set out on my own from Island Crest park at about 6:00 and ran to the middle of the I-90 bridge and back. I watched the sun rise on my return it was great.

On my way home after stopping at Starbucks after practice I think I saw Andrew running in front of Husky stadium, Andrew if that was you, you looked great.

Take care
Karin

Revised Saturday Run

So it turns out that the Wondergirl 5k is at Seward Park on Saturday and would make the planned run pretty difficult. We (Lauren, Lee, Emily and I) were thinking of adding on to Lauren's run (Leschi Starbucks, the Arboretum, Montlake, Ravenna Park) to make 15 miles. Does this sound good to everyone? I'm not going to do the Cupcake run because I know I can't run a little, stop and eat cupcakes, and then finish 15 miles. Lance is actually not going to be able to make it, but it is still going to happen .

Cupcake Run?

Is anyone thinking about doing the Cupcake Run Lance planned for Saturday? I know Andrew posted a group run for Saturday, but Andrew aren't you part of Captain Jacks? There is no charge for the Cupcake run or the trail game Lance has planned for the 13th. I have to say though, when I did the trail games last year, I usually didn't get enough marathon training miles in and had to go do more miles after the workout to get all my miles in. I mentioned the Cupcake Run to someone who might be interested in joining Captain Jack's, so I might do that. I'm not on the Captain Jack's email list any more, so if something comes out about it, I won't get it.
For those who don't know what I'm rambling about, Lance is planning a run leaving from the Ballard Locks (I think), across the Locks, up into Discovery Park and back to cupcakes afterward (optional I'm sure). He said he would plan for various distances so everyone could participate at their own level.
I'll be somewhere Saturday, just not sure where yet.

Who's on for Thursday?

Just want to make sure there will be people to run with on Thursday evening... who's in?

Week of 12/6

Hi All,
Here is a quick plan for next weeks runs. It is all stuff we have done before, so if anyone want anything different let me know.
Monday, 12/1
Meet at 6:45 at Greenlake Parking Lot by Tennis Courts – I think a run nice outer run around the lake is good for the day after the Seattle half, but in industrious folks can do Rogers
Thursday 12/4
Meet at 6:45 Sturgus Park (North Beacon Hill)- 7 miles out out back
Saturday 12/6
Meet at 9 at Seward Park - 15 miles - 1 loop of Seward Park 5 miles out and back and then another loop of Seward Park

Thanks,
Andrew

Post Race Drinks - Buckley's

232 1st ave W, seattle wa 98119
From the finish area - I think it is 5 blocks west on Mercer to 1st ave W - then about 3 1/2 blocks south on 1st.

Thursday, November 27, 2008

Happy Thanksgiving all. I am very thankful to have such wonderful teammates to train with, and for all the positive peer pressure! Hope you all had a great run today. Who added the count down? that's great - we should add a team photo too!
So who wants to take on next weeks runs? I can't - work is so crazy i will be lucky to make even one run next week - and will probably have to depend on some of that peer pressure to make even that.

Wednesday, November 26, 2008

I hope you all have a wonderful Thanksgiving and everyone doing the Seattle Marathon/half marathon on Sunday has a great day. I will be thinking of you as I attempt to hit the ski slopes for the first time this year. There is not much snow but hopefully it will still be fun and if nothing else it should count as my cross training for the week!

Monday, November 24, 2008

Thanks All

I'm so glad I joined the group for the run tonight. This morning I wasn't motivated to run. As it came time for the run, it was clear Lee and Andrew weren't particularly motivated either. Thank goodness for teammates, we all made it and we all ran. Thanks for the motivation (or should I say pressure) everyone.

Andrew's Blog

After the run on Saturday I told Barb, Jennifer and Melinda that I was going to start a blog. Well I did and here it is - http://ironandrewjackson.blogspot.com/

Friday, November 21, 2008

Thank You Andrew - a run report

So - it's been a tough week at work and I really needed to run last night (also I was in charge of scheduling this week's runs - so felt I needed to show up) But I knew Jen had to work so I wouldn't have my usual running partner and I thought MAYBE I could keep up with Sarah (if she took some pity and slowed down some).

By the time I was crossing I-90 on the way to the start - I knew that it would only be Andrew and me. Yikes! I called him and tried to cxl - my rational was he wouldn't want to run as slow as I run, I didn't want to run that route by myself and a warm dinner and my couch were calling my name loudly. Andrew said no problem he would run with me - he was at the start he would wait 5 min until I got there. At this point I was at the Rainier exit and headed to the start. Geeze, I love group pressure!

We started out on the run - it was a beautiful night - clear w/ a couple of high clouds and mostly dry pavement. I did my best to keep a decent pace (for me) and we stayed together having a nice conversation. When we got through the tunnel the view of lake Wa and the eastside was beautiful. Down the stairs and along lk Wa blvd - I was starting to slow down a little and asked if we could go 5 miles not 6. Andrew said yes - then recanted and said "come on it was only out a 1/2 mile more and I really do want to run the whole 6" - so on I trudged.

I then told Andrew run as fasts as you want to the turn around - I'll keep going and turn around when you get back to me. It worked (i got a little repreive and Andrew got to run a little). We headed back and I guessed that I could keep a slightly faster pace if I walked the stairs - so on we went.

When we got to the stairs - I asked Andrew to RUN the stairs twice (maybe he would tire a little) , but couldn't get him to bite. I made it to the top and as we headed back through the tunnel I picked up my pace and thought of it as interval training (its only pain - it won't kill me). Andrew even noticed that I was going a little faster! I was hoping for lots of cars at the two crosswalks so I could catch my breath - where are they when you need them? I continued my "interval" training back to the start w/ about 5.75 miles (Andrew got the full 6) . All in all it was a great run for me!

Andrew - Thank you! I appreciate your gracious attitude and the company/conversation during our run last night!

Not only is next week thanksgiving but it is also the seattle half marathon - which we are all ready for..... especially after our 14 or more mile run last week!!

Monday 645 - greenlake
1 mile warm up
3 X 1 mile at 1-2 minutes faster then race pace with rest periods

Sara and Barb were interested in a morning run that day - anyone else interested in joining them?

Friday
I plan on running 7 miles - anyone want to join me?

Saturday - NO RUNNING!

This calls for a celebration!
Would be kinda nice to find a pre race spot to meet ( moral support)
Post race - the TNT table is always a good spot to meet unless anyone has another suggestion.

Brunch/lunch suggestions for afterwards....anyone? I thought maybe Buckley's - but taking suggestions - and this is for us and any of our friends/family joining us that day.

Week of 11/17 (week 6 on the training plan!)

Thursday 11/20 - 6:45 Start at Sturgus park (see Andrews post for map) - for 6 miles

Sat 11/22 - 9 am Lake Young trail in Renton 9 miles (I'll be running this loop on Sunday - starting at 8AM , let me know if you can join me)

9am saturday ( 25th) Lake Young in Renton
1 loop of the lake on soft surface trail through the woods with rolling hills - 9.6miles

Directions
From seattle take I-5 south to I-405 north(heading east).
Exit onto HWY167 south.
Take first exit SW41st st
Go left at the light, and then take a left at the next light crossing over HWY 167 ( road is called sw43rd and S180th st)
Go up the hill past the hospital. Road changes names several times eventually becoming SE petrovisky.
Just over 3 miles from HWY 167 take a right on 140th Ave Se ( the Fairwood shopping center is on the opposite corner - this is also the coffee location for afterwards)
Go left on SE 181st St ( 0.3 miles from petrovisky)
At 0.5 miles it will turn to the right and become 148th Ave Se - on the left side there will be a gravel area where you can park your cars - if not enough space you can park in the neighborhood by Deb's house.

An idea for Saturday's run...

The schedule calls for 12 miles on Saturday. I was messing around with mapmyrun.com and made a quick route heading north from the Leschi Starbucks, through the Arboretum, to Husky stadium, hop on the Burke Gilman up to Ravenna park. Run through Ravenna park, make a U-turn at Cowen park and retrace our steps. It came out to just over 13 miles but I have no idea how accurate that website is. Does that sound like an OK run for Saturday? It's mostly asphalt but at least there are nice parks and scenery along the way. Or does anyone have a suggestion for Saturday? I'm open to anything.

Thursday Run - 6 miles and a full moon

Hopefully the storms will pass and we'll have a lovely (and dry) run this Thursday, lit by moonlight and city light. Popular vote has chosen Lake Union as our 6-mile run. We'll meet at 6:45 PM in the parking lot across from the Marriott Courtyard on the SW side of Lake Union. Hope that makes sense. See you Thursday! Still working on Saturday's location for our 12-mile run. Stay tuned...

Monday, November 10, 2008

So, Andrew...

(excuse the public post, everyone, I don't have an email address for Andrew) Is it Mark Terwilliger that you know/knew at K2? That's a Mark that came to mind after we chatted on Saturday's run...

Friday, November 7, 2008

West Seattle Run on Saturday 11/8/08

We will meet at Luna Park Cafe and copies Barb's run. Here is a map to our starting point:

http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&um=1&ie=UTF-8&q=Luna+Park+Cafe&fb=1&cid=0,0,2064743064172958048&near=Seattle,+WA&oi=manybox&ct=10&cd=1&resnum=1

Monday's run

Hi all,

It's my turn to host the training week. Is this the schedule we are following? http://www.halhigdon.com/marathon/novices2.htm

I've had out of town guests all week so have done no research on Thurs/Sat runs at this point, so I'm open to suggestions. For Monday the 10th, let's meet at the Green lake tennis courts at 6:45 PM as usual. I'm thinking 3 1-mile repeats at 1 min faster than anticipated marathon pace (plus warm up and cool down). I'm guessing the track will be a big mud bog, so we'll most likely run along the east side of the lake up to the Starbucks corner and back.

Monday, November 3, 2008

Directions to Sturgus Park for Thurday 11/6

11 miles on Friday, November 7

Hello, mighty Team Austin! I will be out of town in Las Vegas next weekend and am planning on doing my longer weekend run (11 miles) on Friday morning. Anyone interested in running around 8:30 or 9am on Friday?

January 25 Run In Port Ludlow

Hello,

As many of you know, I am once again signed up to do the Victoria Half Iron Triathlon with Team in Training. As you also know, this requires me to fundraise for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. I am trying to be a bit more creative with my fundraising this year so I came up with the idea that I would fund raise by staging a long run followed by a meal for the "Look Out Austin Here We Come" group.

Here is the plan. For your long run on January 25, 2009 you would travel to my beach house in Port Ludlow Washington. I will mark out a run at the distance or distances that each of you wish to run. I will provide support along the route including water stops. At the end everyone can shower and then my family and I will prepare and serve a meal (menu has not been decided yet).

If anyone wants to stay the night they are welcome, the Olympic penninsula is fun to explore including Port Townsend. I will provide directions when it is closer to January 25 but if you live in the South end you can get to Port Ludlow in 1 hour 45 minutes. From Seattle you should probably count on 2 hours. Start time is negotiable so feel free to think about it as a group.

If you decide to participate in this fun outing I am asking for a minimum donation of $50.00 to my TNT fundraising. And for the first 8 particpants that contribute Dennis and I will pick you up at the Kingston Ferry terminal so you do not have to drive on the Ferry and worry about lines.

We look forward to your participation. Donations can be made at http://pages.teamintraining.org/wa/nbhtri09/knyrop. And please respond to this blog or send an email to me at nyrop.karin@gmail.com to let me know if you will be participating.

Go Team!!

Week of Oct. 27 Group Run Schedule

Hello!

Based on the Novice 2 training schedule, I've planned the following runs for WEEK THREE OF TRAINING!! Sorry for the lack of an eastside run but I don't know the non-trail areas well enough to plan a run, and the directions on map my run just aren't accurate enough for me. So, I scheduled one run at Seward Park, figuring that's a little closer for you south end folks. If someone wants to coordinate an alternate eastside run, I won't be offended, just let me know. I'm happy to discuss and adjust on Saturday if need be.

Monday, 10/27

Meet 6:45 at Greenlake Parking Lot by Tennis Courts – 3 mile speed work

  • 10 minute warm-up
  • "Roger’s Workout" around greenlake for 20 minutes (1 min hard/ 1 min easy; 2 minutes hard/1 min easy; three minutes hard, two minutes easy. REPEAT)

Sunday Morning Run

9:00 AM Anti-Aircraft Peak Trailhead, Cougar Mt.

Driving Directions: From I-90 eastbound, take exit 13, the Lakemont exit.
Turn right (southbound) onto Lakemont Blvd. Drive approx. 2.5 miles to SE Cougar Mt Way.
Turn left on SE Cougar Mt Way (trailhead is another 2 miles), the road turns left and becomes 168th Place SE, then right to become SE 60th St.
Turn off SE 60th St uphill onto the dead end road, SE Cougar Mt Drive.
The road turns to gravel, at the end is the trailhead parking lot.
There are restrooms at the trailhead.

I will bring maps for the trail run options--two loops totalling 8 miles (5.7 and 2.3)

We will probably visit the Starbucks on Lakemont Blvd after the run.

If you let us know you are joining us by commenting here, we will be sure to wait for you. And yes, please, invite your friends to join us. The more the merrier.

Thursday Evening's Eastside Run--Earlier!

Thursday evening's run has been moved to 5:45 PM. Please meet at the SE 8th and I-405 Park and Ride ready to run at 5:45 PM. We will run for 6 miles starting on sidewalk, then moving to soft surface. We will return just before dark. Reflective clothing, head lights, and rear lights are encouraged. If you let us know you'll be there, we'll wait for you at the Park and Ride. Look forward to seeing you there.

Register for the Seattle 1/2

If you are planning on registering for the Seattle 1/2 Marathon (Sunday 11/30) - you can save yourself $15 if you register today or tomorrow.

I'm in - I just registered!

Thursday 10/16 Bellevue Run

Anyone interested in running earlier than 6:45? Say 5:45?

If Sarah H (or others from the west side) can't get over the bridge - I'm happy to wait, but if everyone can get there earlier it would be nice to have some daylight and get home earlier.
Let me know what you think

Austin Here We Come!

Austin Marathon 2/15/2009 - 26.2 miles is the goal.

You might have heard that we are going to start training to run the Seattle 1/2 Marathon in November and the Austin Marathon in February. We are following a couple of different training schedules that are 18 weeks long (6-weeks falls perfectly into Seattle 1/2), that means we start training this Monday, October 13th. We strongly believe the more people the better, so we'd love to have you and your friends join us.

Right now, we're going to run Monday nights (may change to Tuesday)--westside, Thursday nights--eastside, and Sunday morning (will change to Saturday at some point)--location will vary. The terrain will vary between road surface and soft surface.

Here is the plan for this week:

Monday, October 13, 6:45 PM--Green Lake Tennis Court parking lot (5900 block of West Green Lake Way--that is the large lot on the west side of the track across the street from the southwest corner of the lake)--distance 3 miles, with speed work if you want; we'll run the outer loop of the lake this time.

Thursday, October 16, 6:45 PM--SE 8th/I-405 Park and Ride--distance 5--6 mile, tempo run; we'll head down the sidewalk for about a 1/2 mile, then onto good soft trails. Yes, it will be dark, headlights and reflectors are strongly encouraged.

Sunday, October 19, 9 AM--Eastside--I'm planning on an 8-mile trail run. I'll send the exact location out later in the week.
